Ronald Reagan was our President. Egyp- tian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated during a parade by army members who belong to the Egyptian Islamic Jihad organiza- tion led by Khalid Islambouli; they opposed his negotiations with Israel. The Dodgers won the World Series 4 games to 2 versus the New York Yankees. An unknown singer named Prince opened for the Rolling Stones at a concert at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Ivan- ka Trump was born as was the magazine you are now reading, CNC WEST. I must admit it is so satisfying to work a booth like I did recent- ly at the Westec show and have so many people tell you that they read your magazine religiously and to keep it coming. To think that 36 years ago it was started as a cross my fingers hope this works project by me and my father (ok mostly my father) and now it is the leading metalworking magazine authority in the west. I know I am fortunate that I love manufacturing and love publishing enough that this is my profession. Not my job, because doing this is not a job. 36 years ago, we could have only wished that we were still going strong. In this issue we have three articles by editor Sean Buur. Sean went out and interviewed these companies and came away very impressed with every one of them and feels these are all informative and interesting articles. Our cover story about Arrow Machine in El Cajon describes how a shop in this San Diego area city has really improved productivity with the help of Chick Workholding and Gosiger. The article ‘Its 10:09 Somewhere’ describes how a young man went to Switzerland to learn about watch making and now has a thriving watch manufacturing business in southern California with the help of a RoboDrill and a Tornos Swiss machine. Sean’s final article tells the story of how a thriving Ventura, California shop uses Bechlers, Star Swiss machines and a we are all family management approach to gets parts out fast. As always there is the popular Tim Paul Cad/Cam perspective article along with a couple of other articles and our regular pages filled with industry news, new products and advertisements from some of the best companies in the industry that think highly enough of customers in the west to place an ad with us. Thanks for reading and looking forward to another article like this in 2053…or another 36 years. Sincerely Shawn Arnold Shawn Arnold Publisher
